Diagnostic ultrasound

Being able to offer ultrasound enables us to offer even better physiotherapy services to our patients.

What is diagnostic ultrasound

Diagnostic ultrasound is very safe and quick to use. It uses high frequency sound waves to obtain images from inside the body. The information is sent to a powerful computer which creates an image that can be seen in real time.

How we use ultrasound

A thorough physio assessment and examination usually gives us a good idea about your condition but when combined with an ultrasound scan, we can confirm the diagnosis with more certainty, examine the extent of the injury and design a treatment plan which offers the best possible outcome for you.

If you find a particular movement painful, ultrasound can be helpful for evaluating what is happening at the exact moment you feel the pain.

We can compare the painful area with the asymptomatic side of your body and confirm what is related to or caused by disease and what is normal for you.

Conditions ultrasound can evaluate

We can scan the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, knee, ankle and foot to evaluated conditions such as:

  • Muscle tears
  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Inflammatory arthritis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Tennis and Golfer’s elbow

We do not scan the spine, hips, lumps or bumps.

Ultrasound in women’s health

Our women’s health expert uses ultrasound to provide you with real time visual feedback whilst you carry out your pelvic floor exercises. This is invaluable for helping you see and feel what ‘right’ is like so you can exercise more effectively.

The ultrasound probe is placed low on the tummy while you are laying or standing. This is really useful for seeing if you can get the same ‘lift’ in different positions.

How soon will I get the results of the ultrasound

You will usually be told the results of your scan during or immediately after it is completed. Some times we may need additional time to analyse the images in more detail. In these cases, we will contact you a few days after your scan to explain the results.

How much does diagnostic ultrasound cost

A combined physiotherapy assessment with an ultrasound scan is £125.

For current patients who are referred for a scan by their therapist, the cost is £85.
